Ark of Food and Nutrition Security/Sovereignty (AFANSO) aims at establishing nutrition secure communities in Kibwezi and environs. We focus on Permaculture – holistic human settlements, nutrition education, the three pillars of food and nutrition security (Food production, food availability and food accessibility) we are establishing a hup – Permaculture demonstration site in Kibwezi as a learning ground for the Makueni county.
Kibwezi Baobab project is part of AFANSO, meant to address the needs of vulnerable community groups living in zone 5 (Arid and Semi Arid Lands) where endangered Baobab plants grow both wild and domesticated. With increased population and influx of people after the pre- and post election violence in Kenya (2007/2008), lots of Baobab plants have been cut down to give room for construction to shelter human life. Sustainable human settlement is thus necessary as we protect and preserve this important tree that can live over 1000 years. Germinating the plant and nurturing the plant to flowering stage takes quite many years. The fruit powder of baobab is a super food rich in many nutrients that include Calcium, Zinc, Phosphorous, Potassium, Manganese and other minor elements. Fibre from the buck of Baobab trees makes good baskets and mats when weaved by women like Rita of Huruma women group, earning them income from their hand work. The young leaves of Baobab plants are good vegetable protecting the user from fever; and when dried, they make good herbal tea.
